Vol. 14 No. 3

Private Business. - Safety of Irish Missionaries in China.

With your permission, sir, I would like to mention a matter which, for the moment, takes us outside the domain of mundane affairs. One of the members of this House, who has endeared himself to us by his quiet, unassuming manner, Senator Linehan, for the past eight months has gone through the maddening agony of suspense concerning the safety of his son, Rev. Father Linehan, who is in China. The good news has now come to hand that Father Linehan and his comrade have been released from captivity, and as we felt silently with him in his sorrow we now feel with him in his joy. I think it would not be out of place if through you, sir, we extend to Senator Linehan how happy we feel at the good news he has received of the safety of his son.

Cathaoirleach

I am sure the House rejoices at the release of Father Linehan and the other clergymen in China, where all missionaries have had such trouble. I am sure that Senator O'Neill's words will convey to Senator Linehan the feelings of the House in this matter.
