Vol. 18 No. 31

Appropriation Bill, 1934 (Certified Money Bill)—Committee.

Sections 1 to 4, inclusive, agreed to.
Schedule A agreed to.
SCHEDULE B.

I move recommendation 1:—

Schedule (B), Part 1. To delete in Vote No. 76 the figures "250,000" and to substitute therefor the figures "249,900."

My reason for putting down this is due to the fact that the demand notes for rates show an enormous increase. They are almost double what they were last year in many cases. That is the position in spite of the fact that the Government have added very much to the money they have handed over to the local councils to lessen rates as a whole. Since I put down the recommendation I have been informed that it is intended to bring in a Bill dealing with this. As the Bill will deal with the subject in much more detail, I think it would be much easier to discuss the question on it rather than on this recommendation. The method proposed may strike a blow at the social order and agricultural economy in Connaught and generally throughout the West. I do not know whether it will or will not affect Leinster and Munster. Unless some Senators wish to speak on the recommendation I would be inclined to withdraw it.

Recommendation not pressed.

Schedule B and Title agreed to.
Bill reported without amendment,
