Vol. 22 No. 4

Election of Leas-Chathaoirleach (Resumed).

Senator Tierney was proposed for the office of Leas-Chathaoirleach on Wednesday last. We shall now take the motion on the Order Paper in the names of Senators Lynch and Campbell.

Mr. Lynch

I do not propose to move the motion in my name on the Order Paper:—

That Senator Hogan be elected Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Motion not moved.

The next motion is in the names of Senators McGee and Delany.

I do not desire, as a new member here, to engage in a lengthy speech on this motion. The position I find myself in is that the Auctioneers' Institute have asked me to propose their representative here for the office of Leas-Chathaoirleach and, accordingly, I do so. I believe that Senator Conlon has a long and varied experience and I am perfectly certain he will fill the position with great credit to himself, to the House, and to those of us who nominated him for the Seanad.

I second the motion.

Ní mór dom anois mo bhuidheachas a ghabháil leis an Seanad ar son na honóra atá siad tar éis a thabhairt dom. Nuair a thug mé cead don tSeanadóir Dubhghlas m'ainm a chur isteach le haghaidh an phosta seo, níor mhian liom, ná ní raibh sé im aigne, duine ar bith eile do choinneáil amach as, gan trácht ar dhuine níos fearr ná mé féin, dá mba rud é go raibh sé le fáil.

Geallaim anois don tSeanad go ndéanfa mé mo dhicheall ar na dual-gaisí bhaineas leis an oifig do chó-líonadh, agus go dtabharfa mé cothrom na féinne do gach uile Sheanadóir chó fada is bheas mé sa chathaoir.

I beg to thank the Seanad very sincerely for the honour they have done me in electing me to this high post. I promise that in carrying out the duties assigned to me, I shall always try to be fair to everybody and endeavour to see that the good name and the honour of the Seanad are maintained.
