Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 13 Aug 1941

Vol. 25 No. 25

Business of the Seanad.

I understand there is some arrangement about an earlier hour of meeting to-morrow.

Three o'clock, I presume.

Friday is a holyday of obligation, and there is a number of events, social and otherwise, which country members would like to attend. Therefore, I suggest that it might be better to meet earlier to-morrow so as to give these Senators an opportunity of getting home on the 5 o'clock train. If we start at 3 o'clock, we shall hardly be able to get the business done in time.

It is a matter for the House itself to decide.

Mr. Johnston

I wish to support Senator Honan's contention. There are many functions down the country which some of us want to attend. I propose that we should start to-morrow at 11 o'clock.

Some Senators cannot attend so early to-morrow morning.

After all, coming to Dublin is an adventure now for some of us, and it is almost the same as exploring darkest Africa. Some of us, like Senator Honan and myself, start very early in the morning and are travelling practically all day.

We all realise that Friday, the 15th of August, is a great holyday throughout the country, and a date to which a great deal of importance is attached. I suggest that, since the Seanad is meeting next week in any case, and since very little could be done between 3 o'clock to-morrow and the hour of departure of trains in the evening, it would be better to postpone further consideration of the Bill until next Wednesday.

Perhaps the Senator would consider the Minister and his officers.

Would it suit the convenience of the Seanad to meet at 12 o'clock to-morrow?

Agreed that the Seanad sit at 12 o'clock.

The Seanad adjourned at 9.50 p.m., until 12 noon on Thursday, 14th August, 1941.
