Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 3 Jun 1942

Vol. 26 No. 16

Business of Seanad.

I have just been informed that the Taxes and Duties (Special Circumstances) Bill, 1942, has been passed by the Dáil and has been certified to be a Money Bill. I understand that the Bill is being forwarded to us this evening. Under Standing Order No. 69, if a meeting of the Seanad has not been arranged for within seven days of the receipt of such a Bill, the Standing Order enjoins that the Seanad shall be forthwith summoned to meet within seven days after such receipt. That would necessitate a meeting of the Seanad next Wednesday. I may say that it was not my intention to suggest to the House that it should meet before Wednesday, the 17th June, when we will have two—and possibly three—other Bills, and there will probably be a motion left over from to-day. In the circumstances I think it would meet with the convenience of the House if we also postpone the Second Reading of the Taxes and Duties Bill until that date.

If the House would be good enough to make an order that the Second Stage of the Bill be taken on the 17th June, then there would be no necessity for a special meeting on next Wednesday. Perhaps the House would be agreeable to that course.

Agreed.
