Vol. 35 No. 2

Election of Leas-Chathaoirleach—Motion.

I move the motion standing in my name:

That Senator Seán Goulding be elected Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Anything I might feel inclined to say on behalf of Senator Goulding would be superfluous. He is very well known to most of the members of this House. I believe that he is eminently suitable for the position. He has acted in the position of Cathaoirleach for a number of years and if and when elected I believe he will carry out his duties in future as he carried them out in the past, with efficiency, courtesy and everything else that anyone could desire from a Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Cuidím leis an rún go dtoghfar Seán Ó Guilidhe mar Leas-Chathaoirleach agus aontaím go fonnmhar agus go bríomhar leis. Ní gá dom mórán a rá chun an Seanadóir Ó Guilidhe a mholadh. Molann an obair an fear, agus an obair atá déanta ag an Seanadóir mar Chathaoirleach, molann sí go hard é. Togha fir é, togha Ghaeil. Gach uile rud a theastódh uaidh mar Leas-Chathaoirleach, tá sé aige. On that account, I am very happy to second the motion in the name of Senator Quirke. I am certain that you who have worked so happily with Senator Goulding during the last Seanad will welcome his co-operation. We have had very pleasant memories of Chairmen in this Seanad since the time of our first Chairman, Senator Gibbons and, helped by our most efficient and most careful Clerk, Seán Malone, the work of this House has been conducted in a way that would do honour to any Parliament in Europe. I feel that you will be glad to accept and I hope the House will accept unanimously the nomination I have the honour to second.

Táimid ar aon aigne leis an tairisgint. Táimid sásta glacadh leis an Seanadóir Ó Guilidhe mar Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Motion agreed to unanimously.
