Vol. 35 No. 6

Business of Seanad.

It is not proposed to take the three motions on the Order Paper to-night. I take it that we will not have any other business until we get the Appropriation Bill. Therefore, I think the House might adjourn sine die.

There are three motions on the Order Paper which have been submitted by members of the House. If it is the feeling of members late at night, when Government business is disposed of, that the House should adjourn, I think the House itself ought to make some arrangements to place private members' business high up on the Order Paper so that it will be attended to. I hope that we are not going to follow the example of the Dáil where they have 15 or 20 motions on the Order Paper with no opportunity to discuss them. This House has a better opportunity of dealing with private members' motions than the Dáil has. I would urge that this matter should be considered, with a view to having proper arrangements made at an early date for dealing with private members' motions before they become too numerous on the Order Paper.

I think the House might adjourn sine die on the understanding that the next business to come before us will occupy a day's sitting. We will probably then have the Appropriation Bill. We may, of course, have to meet earlier for some other purpose, and in that event will have quite considerable time for the discussion of these motions. I agree with what Senator Duffy has said about dealing with these motions, but I do not think the House ought to meet specifically for that purpose only.

The Seanad adjourned at 9.10 p.m. sine die.
