Seanad Éireann debate -
Thursday, 28 Jun 1951

Vol. 39 No. 15

Business of Seanad.

Before the Seanad adjourns, may I point out that the Finance Bill has passed all its stages in Dáil Éireann. I do not propose, in view of the fact that it has happened so recently, to ask the House to give me any stages of the Bill now, though I should have thought that it would meet our mutual convenience if I were able to take the Second Reading now and consider the Bill on Committee and Report on the next occasion. However, the Bill, as the Seanad is aware, is a money Bill and must, therefore, be dealt with somewhat expeditiously. I should be very grateful if, when it appears on the Order paper for the next meeting, the House would agree to give me all stages on that day.

I am glad that the Minister is not pressing the point. This Finance Bill provides one of the occasions on which general financial policy can be debated. There are only a few such occasions and any of us who have been members of the Seanad for a long time know that it is really a Second Stage debate. So far as I am concerned, I shall ask my colleagues to agree to take all stages, but I suggest that, in the preliminary notice which goes out, it should be noted that all stages will probably be taken and that if anyone should have a recommendation to put forward, it should be sent in. If that were done, the situation would be quite clear and all stages could be taken next week.

Mr. O'Farrell

For the Labour Party, Senator McCrea and myself would agree to take all stages next week.

I think the people on this side will also agree.

The Seanad adjourned at 3.10 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, 4th July, 1951.
