Vol. 40 No. 2

Fógraí ó'n gCathaoirleach. - Election of Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Tairgim:—

Go dtoghfar Tadhg Ó Donnabháin, Seanadóir, mar Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Ní gá morán a rá i dtaobh na tairiscinte seo. Tá aithne ag formhór na Senadóirí atá i láthair ar an Seanadóir Thadhg Ó Donnabháin. Tá taithaighe agus eolas maith aige ar obair pharlaiminte agus ar dhualgaisí na Cathaoireach. Fear direach, macánta, é a bhfuil fhios aige conus a bheith láidir gan a bheith burb agus cionnus a bheith ré-chneastá gan a bheith ró bhog. Tá guth breá aige agus an fhaid a bhí sé ina Chathaoirleach agus in a Leas-Chathaoirligh cheanna sa Tigh seo do thug sé, mar is eol dúinn go léir, cóir agus cothrom do gach éinne. Tá mé cinnte, dá bhrigh sin, go nglachfar leis mar Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Senators are aware of the experience which Senator Tadhg Ó Donnabháin has had in the Chair and of his acquaintance with parliamentary work in general. I think that from their experience they will be prepared to accept this motion.

It gives me great pleasure to second the proposal of Senator Professor Hayes that Senator Timothy J. O'Donovan be elected Leas-Chathaoirleach. As the House is aware, Senator O'Donovan has the essential qualities of dignity and courtesy that should be associated with an officer of this House. It gives me personal pleasure to second this motion because this House has already honoured Galway, through the election of Senator Ó Buachalla as Cathaoirleach. I hope that, by honouring Cork in the person of Senator O'Donovan, the City of the Tribes will be preserved from the fury of a Cork onslaught.

Question put and agreed to.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

Tá mé fíor-bhuíoch de chomhaltaí an Seanaid as ucht mé a thoghadh mar Leas-Chathaoirleach. Déanfaidh mé mo dhícheall mo dhualgais a chomhlíonadh ar chumas a shásós gach éinne sa tSeanad.

I am very grateful to the members of the Seanad for having elected me as Leas-Chathaoirleach. I shall do my best to perform my duties with satisfaction to all.
