Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 4 Jun 1952

Vol. 40 No. 18

Sugar (Prohibition of Import) Order, 1952—Motion.

I formally move:—

That Seanad Éireann hereby approves of the Sugar (Prohibition of Import) Order, 1952.

The Seanad is familiar with this motion because it comes up every year. The Sugar (Control of Import) Act requires that an Order made by the Government under that Act confining the importation of sugar to the Sugar Company must be confirmed annually by the Oireachtas. It has been done every year since the Act was passed, and under present circumstances I think there is not much likelihood of any alteration in conditions which would eliminate the desirability of bulk buying of any sugar we have to import. Consequently, it is proposed to maintain the existing arrangements for another year.

Motion agreed to.
