Vol. 40 No. 23

Trade Union Bill, 1952—Second and Subsequent Stages.

Question proposed: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time."

This is only a continuation Bill?

Yes. Under the Trade Union Act, 1936, the Minister was given power to permit certain unions to be licensed with a reduced deposit. That power was given for one year only. Each year since the power has been renewed under a similar Bill.

I know the Minister is considering the introduction of a new Trade Union Bill. Could he tell us the date on which this Bill will be introduced?

I feel it would be optimistic to say that the Bill will become law within a year. That is why I framed this Bill, without limit in time. It is extremely unlikely that anybody would propose to require a higher deposit from these trades unions until the whole matter was reviewed.

I presume it is the last time the Minister will have to request the power sought under this Bill?

It is.

Question agreed to.

When is it proposed to take the Committee and remaining stages?

Now, if the Seanad agrees.

Bill put through Committee without amendment and reported, received for final consideration, and passed.

The Seanad adjourned at 6.40 p.m. sine die.
