Vol. 43 No. 3

Control of Imports (Quota No. 10) Order—Motion.

I move the motion standing in the name of Senator Quirke:—

That Seanad Éireann hereby approves of the Control of Imports (Quota No. 10) Order, 1934 (Road Vehicle Bodies) (Amendment) Order, 1953.

It might facilitate the House if the three motions were taken together.

They must be taken separately.

The first motion relates to a quota Order which concerns road vehicle bodies. Every Order which may be made by the Government under the Control of Imports Acts requires to be confirmed by the Oireachtas in the same way as an Order under the Emergency Imposition of Duties Act. In this case we had an Order applying to the bodies of road commercial vehicles. Again we ran foul of obligations under the O.E.E.C. Agreement and the council of the organisation did not agree with our departure from liberalisation in regard to these goods or to our proposal to make a switch between them and another class of goods on the non-liberalised list. We accepted the decision of the council and revoked the quota Order, substituting an import duty. This motion relates to the amendment of the quota Order to make that substitution.

Question put and agreed to.
