Vol. 45 No. 7

Death of Senator—Expression of Sympathy.

It is my sad duty to-day to bring to the notice of the Seanad the unexpected death since our last meeting, of Senator Matthew Smith. At that meeting the late Senator was in attendance apparently in his usual good health.

Senator Smith was elected to the Nominating Bodies Sub-Panel on the Industrial and Commercial Panel at the General Election of 1954. During his short membership here he became popular with members of all groups.

The late Senator took his Parliamentary duties seriously, and was in constant attendance in the House. He entered wholeheartedly into all movements for the benefit of the country, whether national or local, giving of his best unsparingly. At an early age he joined the Volunteers, and was a prominent figure in the fight for independence. He also took a keen interest in the business life of the community. Senator Smith's death will be deeply mourned.

To the widow and relatives of the late Senator I shall convey, with your assent, your sympathy and appreciation. Solas Dé le na anam.

Senators rose in their places.
