Death of Senator—Expression of Sympathy.

It is with feelings of the deepest regret that I have to announce the death of our friend and colleague, Senator Fred Hawkins. His death, which came as a great shock to all of us this morning, was sudden and most unexpected as it was only a few short days ago I had a conversation with him here in Leinster House when he appeared to be in his usual good health.

The late Senator was one of the most industrious members of the Seanad and a competent and versatile debater. He was a frequent and forceful speaker with varied experience and a considerable knowledge, especially of local government. He was a man of firm and strong political views, but however vigorously he spoke it was with restraint and he never gave personal offence to those with whom he was in disagreement. His personality and his sense of humour made him popular with all members of the House, irrespective of their political ties.

From his early manhood, Senator Hawkins was imbued with a deep love of his native land and he was prominently identified with the national movement. As a result of his activities during the War of Independence, he served many terms of imprisonment in various jails throughout the country.

He was first elected to Seanad Éireann in 1938 and remained a member to 1944. He was again elected in 1946 and at each subsequent election. As a member of the Seanad, he attended to his duties most assiduously and rarely missed a meeting.

To the widow and children of the late Senator, I shall convey, on your behalf and on my own, our deepest sympathy and appreciation. Solás Dé le na anam.

Senators rose in their places.
