Vol. 50 No. 12

Public Business. - Business of Seanad.

I should like to say that I have been examining the possibilities of how best to expedite the consideration of this Bill and the remaining business which we have on the Order Paper and other important business which is coming from the Dáil. I should like to submit the following proposal with that end in view —that we meet on Tuesday next, 10th March, at 3 p.m. to deal with important business as distinct from the Third Amendment of the Constitution Bill; that on Wednesday we resume consideration of that Bill and make every endeavour to put the question on sub-section (1º) at 6 p.m. and the question on sub-section (2º) at 10 p.m., and that on Thursday we resume consideration of the Bill and complete the Committee Stage on Thursday night.

I might add that the Central Fund Bill will be completed in the Dáil next week, and will be sent to the House for consideration and must be passed before Easter. It is, therefore, proposed that we meet the following week, on the 18th March, the day after St. Patrick's Day, to deal with the Central Fund Bill and, when completed, to adjourn for Easter. I should like to have the views of the Leader of the Opposition on that.

That is a very desirable programme as far as I am concerned. I consulted some people about it. We would be prepared to do our best to carry it out. The Central Fund Bill must be passed before the 31st March and, having regard to the way in which the dates now run, unless we meet in Holy Week or in Easter Week, we could not possibly do that unless we completed the Central Fund Bill on the 19th March or the 20th March at the latest. We will do our best to carry out the suggestion and meet on Tuesday next to consider the Bills on the Order Paper other than this particular Amendment of the Constitution Bill and to take up that Bill on Wednesday and have the division, if we can manage it at all, as suggested by Senator Mullins.

The Seanad adjourned at 10 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, 10th March, 1959.
