Seanad Éireann debate -
Saturday, 30 May 1959

Vol. 51 No. 2

Teachtaireachtaí ó Dháil Éireann. - Election of Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Tairgim:

"Go dtoghfar an Seanadóir Seán Ó Donnabháin mar Leas-Chathaoirleach."

Tá na tréithe aige is gá chun na hoibre a dhéanamh. Tá taithí aige ar ghnó Rialtais agus ar ghnó Páirliminteach annseo agus ins an Dáil. Táim deimhin go dtabhaírfaídh sé ceart agus cothrom do gach Seanadóir, mar tugtar i gcomhnaí ón gCathaoir. Mar sin, tá áthas mór orm a ainm a chur ós comhair an tSeanaid.

In seconding the motion that Senator John O'Donovan be elected Leas-Chathaoirleach, I can think of no higher recommendation than to say that I think he will prove a worthy successor to the late lamented Senator Baxter. I know he can be relied on to uphold the high standards and traditions of this House which are followed by you, Sir, and which were followed by the late Senator Baxter. I have pleasure therefore in supporting his candidature.

I should like to have a better definition of the candidate for the position of Leas-Chathaoirleach. My name is also John O'Donovan and I should like to point out that I am not a candidate for the position. I would seriously suggest that as I have often heard the candidate referred to as "Dr. John O'Donovan," I should be satisfied if the word "Dr. " was put in, if it can be put in, because I certainly do not want to be confused with the Senator.

I should like to say that I have pleasure in supporting this candidate and I am confident that he will fill the Chair in an admirable manner. I for one will try to see to it that he is, on occasion, given matters to decide which will bring into play all the spirit of fair-mindedness which I know him to have. I recommend the candidature and support the motion.

Question put and agreed to.

Ba mhaith liom mo bhuíochas do gabháil leis an Seanad toisc go bhfuiltear tar éis mé thoghadh mar Leas-Chathaoirleach. Déanfaidh mé mo dhicheall dualgaisí an phuist do chomh-líonadh mar is gá agus ceart do thabhairt do gach Seanadóir agus cúnamh do thabhairt duit-fhéin, a Chathaoirligh, go speisíalta.
