Vol. 53 No. 7

Business of Seanad.

I have a motion down which I was hoping would be taken today because it is of extreme importance to one of the major industries in this country. We have a quota of 2,000,000——

We cannot discuss the matter now. I presume the Senator wishes to ask a question?

If possible, I should like to have the motion taken today because it is of importance.

I should like to support Senator Prendergast. If there is time at the end of the business, that is to say, if the remainder of the business is completed before 10 o'clock tonight, I think the motion should be taken.

I had hoped, when arranging business, to be able to take the motion but, due to difficulties in regard to certain matters, I was unable to include it in the order. Perhaps it might be possible, as Senator O'Donovan said, to see to it later on when we see how we get on.

We have a long list of motions piling up now, and one rather gets the impression that not quite so much expedition is used in getting to these motions as one would like.

Might I suggest the Government might consider making special time available in the Seanad for disposing of the motions in the next session, if we cannot reach them to-day?

If my motion is not taken to-day, obviously it will not be taken before February or March.

The Leader of the House has already made a statement on the matter. Perhaps the Senator will have a word with him later.

I made a request to raise a matter on the Adjournment, Sir, to which you have not referred. I sent a message to you, Sir, handed in by me yesterday afternoon, asking for permission to raise a matter on the Adjournment. It was addressed to you and was taken by a porter in the hall. I am sorry, Sir. I assumed it had reached you.

Through some oversight, apparently, the notice has not reached me.

May I mention the matter, Sir? You might give some thought to it and say later on whether you deem it in order.

Perhaps the Senator would indicate what the matter was about?

The matter related to the unsatisfactory nature and mode of application of the Horses (Regulations of Export) Order, 1960, and the Horses (Carriage by Sea) Order, 1960.

I shall look into the matter presently.
