Vol. 53 No. 11

Business of Seanad.

In view of the fact that so much reference was made to motions here to-day and in order to avoid any possible misunderstanding, may I refer to the motion in the name of Senator Donegan, No. 9, and inform the Seanad that the Minister for Industry and Commerce is not accountable to the Oireachtas for the operation of the companies at present operating at what were the G.N.R. Works in premises at Dundalk. These are private companies.

In relation, however, to the extent that he is accountable to the Dáil for moneys voted for the purpose of the stand-off and severance payments to former G.N.R. workers, the Minister proposes to introduce a Supplementary Estimate in the Dáil during the coming session. He does not wish to anticipate anything he might say on that occasion by making a statement such as is requested in the Senator's motion. I want to make that clear in case of any misunderstanding.

I was given to understand yesterday that, if there was time last night, my motion in relation to parent-teacher groups in the schools would come up. I understand that the Minister is not free this morning. It is now only 11.40 a.m. and we have quite a lot of time at our disposal. There are other motions. There are one or two such as the last one mentioned by Senator Ó Maoláin and the motion about the railways in Cork, which, for one reason or another, have been deferred. There is a motion in the name of several Senators in relation to poor law valuations. There is my motion about schools and there is a motion in the name of Senator Quinlan about agriculture. This opportunity, when we have time to spare and are about to adjourn, could more profitably be used by better planning of the time devoted to motions.

The House has disposed of the business ordered. The House stands adjourned sine die.

The Seanad adjourned at 11.40 a.m. sine die.
