Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 3 Jan 1962

Vol. 55 No. 2

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business as on the Order Paper down to No. 10, inclusive.

Arising out of the business as announced by the Leader of the House, in discussion with the authorities, I find that my motion No. 11 is not in order, due to the fact that it is out of date in that what it asks under heading (i) has already been attained in the cease fire or, as it is called, the hold fire that prevails in Katanga at the moment. The second part of the motion calling for "a full investigation by representatives of the present members of the Security Council into the alleged atrocities in Katanga and events leading up to the present hostilities" cannot be discussed because it was contingent on the first part.

I accept that ruling and consequently I beg leave to withdraw the motion in its present form, but I hope within the next few days to put down a motion which will cover the material in subparagraph (ii) calling for this investigation, to widen the scope of the discussion considerably and to provide material for a full scale debate on the United Nations in this Chamber.

We must await the terms of the motion.

I do hope, in withdrawing this motion, that the House will show itself worthy of being Seanad Eireann by the open and objective manner in which it will approach what I hope will be a very worthwhile and full-scale debate.

The motion will be withdrawn from the Order Paper.
