Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 9 Feb 1966

Vol. 60 No. 13

Business of Seanad.

In order that we should have some notion of what will happen tomorrow, may I ask if the motion on national schools will come up and, if not, when it is likely to come up?

The position about tomorrow now appears to be that we shall continue the discussion on the Air Companies Bill and then go on to the motion on manpower policy for which I had made arrangements with the Parliamentary Secretary in anticipation that we would have got through the Education motion this evening. Obviously, I have been an optimist and I might still be an optimist if I forecast that we can deal with the Education motion this day week.

If we do not reach it next Wednesday, can I take it that we shall pass on to it on Thursday? I should point out that there are numerous other motions as well as mine which the Seanad are not reaching, let alone dealing with them.

The Senator is talking a lot of poppycock when he says the Seanad are not dealing with them. What does he think we are doing?

There are numerous motions on the Order Paper which we have not yet reached. We have reached my motion but in respect of it we are in a state of suspended animation. The same applies to the debate on the manpower policy. I should like to see a little more time allowed for these motions. I am not blaming the Leader of the House but I think he is underestimating the time required.

The only way of meeting the Senator is by arranging to have a curb put on speeches made on Committee Stages of Bills so that we could have more time for motions. It is obvious that the reason we are not getting time to deal with motions is the long speeches being made on Bills by Senators.

More Thursday meetings would also be useful.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

Shall we make arrangements for tomorrow's Thursday meeting?

There was no meeting last Thursday.

It is proposed to meet at 10.30 tomorrow morning to deal with the Bill now before the House. Following that, the debate on the manpower policy will be resumed and we hope to complete it. There will be no other business tomorrow.

The Seanad adjourned at 10 p.m. until 10.30 a.m. on Thursday, 10th February, 1966.
