Seanad Éireann debate -

Vol. 66 No. 3

Sitting of Seanad.

I move that the House do adjourn sine die. I understand, however, that it is proposed to hold a special sitting of the Seanad on Tuesday, 21st January, to commemorate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the first sitting of the First Dáil.

I take it that the announcement of that date does not preclude an earlier sitting to which the Leader of the House referred earlier this afternoon?

Perhaps Members of the Dáil will be meeting at the same time in company with Senators in a joint meeting.

I thought a joint meeting on 21st had been announced.

I do not think it is finally decided.

My understanding was that it was to be a joint meeting. Perhaps I heard what I wanted to hear.

It merely says, "it is proposed to hold a special sitting of the Seanad". Whether it will be a joint meeting of the two Houses has not been finally decided.

I understood that it was to be addressed by the President and that means it must be a joint session under the Constitution. I think the Seanad would not accept it otherwise.

Question put and agreed to.
The Seanad adjourned at 5.45 p.m.sine die.
