Vol. 67 No. 1

Death of Member.

My first duty as Cathaoirleach is a melancholy one. I announce to the House the tragic and untimely death of our colleague, Senator James J. Martin. Ar flaitheas Dé go raibh a anam. From the early years of his manhood Senator Martin took an active interest in the national movement. In the War of Independence he played a prominent part with the Roscommon Branch of the Irish Republican Army.

He was a well-known farmer and farmed extensively at his home at Derrymoyle in Laois. He was also a member of the Laois County Committee of Agriculture. Not surprisingly, his agricultural interests played a part in his election as Senator. In the general election of 1965 and again this year he was nominated by the Bloodstock Breeders' and Horseowners' Association of Ireland for the Agricultural Panel. On both occasions he was successful in being elected to the House. Senator Martin was for many years a member of Laois County Council and he devoted much of his time and energy to the interests of the people in the area. As a Senator he was most zealous in his parliamentary duties and he rarely missed a meeting of the Seanad. Of a kindly and friendly disposition, he was popular with members of all parties.

To the widow and children of the late Senator I should like to convey on your behalf and on my own our sympathy and appreciation. Solas Dé lena anam.

Members stood in their places.
