Vol. 69 No. 14

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take No. 9.

I would ask the Leader of the House if he can give us an indication of when No. 10 will be taken. It deals with Irish agriculture and fisheries in the EEC. If the Leader of the House could give us an assurance that it will come up in the reasonably near future I should prefer not to deal with agriculture on this motion.

We will try to take it in the near future but we cannot give an indication at the moment of when precisely it will be taken.

I got an indication, not directly from the Leader of the House, that it was proposed to take motion No. 16 next. I just want to say —and this is the earliest opportunity I have had of saying it—that from our point of view it would not suit us particularly to take that motion because the person who would be acting as our spokesman in connection with it might not be available.

That is the moneylending motion?

Yes, the "7 Days" motion.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

I would remind Senators that the question of the fixing of the Order of Business is a matter to be determined by proposition and amendment. Accordingly, all points which Senators wish to make should be made before the Leader of the House concludes in regard to this matter. I would also suggest that there are many items raised from time to time on the Order of Business more properly dealt with outside the House through the usual channels.

The Leader of the House said yesterday—it may have been inadvertently—that he would indicate on the next sitting day when No. 2 on the Order Paper—the Enforcement of Court Orders Bill relating to deserted wives—would be taken. The next sitting day is, of course, today. He may not have meant literally the next sitting day but in case he did mean it literally I have to ask him now whether he could let me know, even approximately, when this Bill will be taken?

Motion No. 5 has been gathering dust for a very long time and I would put a proposition to the Leader of the House that when we take the Higher Education Authority Bill perhaps he might consider taking motion No. 5 with that Bill.

By the next sitting day I meant the next normal sitting day, not today which is devoted to a motion. In regard to No. 5 I will see what we can do about Senator Quinlan's suggestion.
