Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 16 Jun 1971

Vol. 70 No. 5

Business of the Seanad.

The Leader of the House intimated that we were to take at 10.30 a.m. tomorrow Motion No. 21 on the Order Paper, a subject on which I should like to make a speech. Does this adjournment mean, for my clarification, that at 10.30 in the morning we discuss the motion?

The motion is being taken tomorrow.

Only the motion?

And this debate is being adjourned until when?

Until next Wednesday. If any Senator has any strong view, they may raise the matter tomorrow, but the motion must take priority tomorrow. That is generally accepted.

I accept completely Senator Ryan's superior knowledge of what are the proper rules of the Seanad on all these things, but I wanted to make an extremely boring contribution to this debate. I will not be here next Wednesday, unfortunately. I will be absolutely unable to escape the pairing next Wednesday, but I am ready to talk tomorrow morning or afternoon. I do not know how to push the matter any further, except to say that I want to talk on this debate. I might get some relief if I could talk on Committee Stage. In accordance with the proposals made by the Committee on Procedure and Privileges and adopted by the House the motion should finish before 1 p.m.

If the motion finishes before 1 p.m. tomorrow would it be possible to——

Acting Chairman

I do not think we can decide these points this evening; they must be decided tomorrow morning.

I think it is unlikely that the proposal would be accepted.

An attempt at apoplexy would not be wise.

Acting Chairman

All I can do is adjourn the Seanad.

The Seanad adjourned at 10.05 p.m. until 10.30 a.m. on Thursday, 17th June, 1971.
