Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 1 Nov 1978

Vol. 90 No. 1

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4, and No. 21 if time permits. It is proposed to take Nos. 3 and 4 together.

On the Order of Business, I would like to refer to the very important and urgent Motion No. 20 on the Order Paper to the effect that Seanad Éireann calls on the Government to make an order to preserve indefinitely the Viking site at Wood Quay, already designated a national monument, in view of the many other sites in Dublin available for civic offices. I would like to propose that due to the very great urgency of this matter with winter coming on and with the situation as yet unresolved, merely being dealt with in terms of a moratorium, the Seanad should be given an opportunity to discuss this issue which is one which is peculiarly suited to the atmosphere and the personnel of the Seanad. I feel at this time that it is an extremely urgent matter and I therefore propose it be included in the Order of Business today.

I would like to second Senator Martin's proposal. I think that the Seanad is the appropriate body to debate the motion on Wood Quay. I think that Senator Martin himself raised this issue on the Adjournment four years ago and the controversy still reigns. There have been large public demonstrations. We would be failing in our duty if we did not consider this matter as soon as possible and I would like to see the Government making every effort to allow a debate on this specific issue at the earliest possible moment.

The House is aware that each group is given an opportunity in turn to take a motion and at the moment it is the Labour Party's turn but I shall certainly bear the matter in mind and try to expedite the turn of the Independents, I will talk to Senator Martin afterwards and see when it could be possible to take it.

Order of Business agreed to.
