Vol. 98 No. 8

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take items Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 in that order.

I wish to propose a vote of congratulations to the Northern Ireland football team on their magnificent performance in the World Cup.

I second that motion.

I would very much like to be associated with that motion. It is a real example of what a lot of fire in the belly can do as opposed to the great odds that the Northern Ireland team faced. I have great pleasure in being associated with that motion.

I should like to support what has been said by my colleagues. The achievements, the scope indicated that where a divided community can find common ground — if there is common ground to be found — there is no limit to what can be achieved.

I, too, would like to be associated with the remarks passed by my colleagues. I note that tomorrow night West Germany will be playing in the semi-final of the World Cup. Hopefully some day West Germany and East Germany will play as a single team in the World Cup. I sincerely hope that some day Northern Ireland and the Twenty-six Counties, as they are called, will play together as a united team when we might have Germany play Ireland in the final of the World Cup at some stage.

Senators

Hear, hear.

Lest anyone think that Fine Gael are not gratified by the performance of Northern Ireland in the World Cup, I wish to join in the sentiments that have been expressed.

We forgot about the Sheik from Kuwait.

I, too, would like to be associated with Senators' remarks. I thought it would have been out of order, on the Order of Business, to discuss this kind of subject. However, now that you have allowed it to be in order, a Chathaoirligh, I concur with all the sentiments expressed.

Does anybody now want to say anything relevant to the Order of Business?

In view of the fact that there was some uncertainty earlier about the time when motion No. 4 on the Order Paper would be taken, it is clear that it is a straight run-on, that there is no question of an intermission before motion No. 4 is taken. My earlier understanding was that the Minister might not be available and that a debate on motion No. 4 might have to be postponed at a particular time.

I understand that that will not be necessary.

Order of Business agreed to.
