Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 4 Apr 1984

Vol. 103 No. 8

Order of Business.

It is proposed to order Nos. 1 to 5 and to take No. 5 at 6.30, unless reached earlier, which would be most unlikely. It is proposed to adjourn from 5.30 to 6.30. I might, perhaps, indicate to the Seanad why the Order of Business is as it is. Senators will be aware that there is a large amount of Government business on the Order Paper at the moment. Of that business it is essential that No. 1, the European Assembly Elections Bill, should be passed before the House adjourns for Easter. Accordingly it is being ordered for today. Naturally the Minister would like to have this Bill as soon as possible but, if the House desires — and my understanding is that it does desire — a separate Committee Stage, this would be possible on the understanding that all Stages would be passed this day week. In regard to No. 4, the Housing (Homeless Persons) Bill, which is already being debated on Second Stage, I gave an undertaking that if Government business permitted this debate could be resumed in Government time. Actually the pressure of Government business does not permit it — there is more Government business to be dealt with — but nevertheless I think it is appropriate that it should be ordered for today. It is my intention, if it is not reached today, that it should be ordered higher up on the Order Paper on this day week.

We are not prepared to take the Committee Stage of the European Assembly Elections Bill today, but we would be prepared to give all Stages next Wednesday.

Order of Business agreed to.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

I wish to bring to the notice of Members a misprint in today's Order Paper. Item 4 should read "Housing (Homeless Persons) Bill, 1983."
