Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 11 Jul 1984

Vol. 104 No. 12

Business of Seanad.

I have received notice from Senator Michael Lynch that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The increase in the problem of smuggling and its implications for the economy and business.

It appears to me that this matter is very wide-ranging in its scope and not appropriate for the limited debate allowed under the Standing Order. It may be more suitable for discussion on a substantive motion. I must, therefore, disallow the matter.

The economy, particularly small businesses, is being sucked dry and being crippled by activities in places like Dundalk. I have evidence here that would surprise the House if I could introduce it. I regret that I have to wait to do so until the Seanad resumes later in the year.
