Seanad Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 18 Sep 1984

Vol. 105 No. 3

Business of Seanad.

When is it proposed to sit again?

It is proposed to sit tomorrow at 10.30 a.m.

Will the Acting Leader tell me at what time he intends to take the debate on the Forum report?

As the House will be aware, we are very anxious to get Second Stage of this Bill completed this week without limiting in any way the length of any Member's contribution. If it is necessary to sit on Thursday or any subsequent days that will be done to facilitate the Members to make their Second Stage contributions. Bearing that in mind, the time of the commencement of the one and a half hours to be allocated to the Forum report debate will depend to a certain extent on the length of contributions on Second Stage of the Bill and adjudgment and discussion between the Whips in the course of the day. I would propose tomorrow morning probably that either it would start at 6.30 p.m. tomorrow or, as an alternative, at 4 p.m., and a decision probably will not be taken until after lunch as to which of those times will be chosen. We will have to balance the number of speakers remaining and whether it will justify going into the Thursday sitting. That is the decision that will have to be taken, so it will be the last one and a half hours of our sitting tomorrow. It may be taken at 4 p.m. until 5.30 p.m., it may be taken at 6.30 p.m., depending on the number of speakers offering on the Criminal Justice Bill and discussions between the Whips during the course of the day. I am sorry I cannot be more helpful than that.

I thank the Senator.

The Seanad adjourned at 8.05 p.m. until 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday, 19 September 1984.
