Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 3 Oct 1984

Vol. 105 No. 10

Business of Seanad.

I do not want to be cribbing about this, but I should be grateful if Members of the Seanad would resume their seats after divisions because there is a great deal of noise about the place. Thank you very much.

The tellers involved in the division on the Fifth Stage of the Copyright Bill, 1984, earlier today, have come to me and stated that an error has been made in the division in that Senator Lanigan was not recorded as voting níl. In the circumstances, the result of the division will be altered in the Journal of the proceedings today to take account of the error. However, in correcting the error I must put on record, as I believe has already been done earlier today in the House, that the clerks are only responsible for recording the names of the Members. The tellers are responsible for the accuracy of the numbers.

As the person involved, when I got up it was just for the record of the House. I was not criticising anybody. It brought home the fact that it is up to us to make certain that our names are recorded. But because in the past we have tended to go away from the actual proper recording, we passed through without mentioning that we were passing through. There was no criticism intended of the officials or of the tellers. However, I am delighted that the Cathaoirleach and the officials have seen fit to amend the record.
