Seanad Éireann debate -

Vol. 108 No. 3

Business of Seanad.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

I have notice from Senator Donie Cassidy that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The immediate need for the Minister for Education to sanction the building of a new vocational school at Castle-pollard, County Westmeath, to replace the existing school which is totally inadequate and seriously impeding the educational progress of the students in attendance there.

I also received notice from Senator Michael D. Higgins of the following matter:

The serious implications in the closure of Scoil Ard Mhuire, an open residential reformatory school for young offenders at Lusk, County Dublin.

I regard both matters as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Cassidy's motion for today's Adjournment and it will be taken from 8 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. or earlier if the business ordered is concluded. Senator Higgins may give notice for another day of the matter he wishes to raise.

Because of the urgency of the matter involved, I have already informed the staff of the Seanad that it is my intention to seek to raise this matter tomorrow or at such other time as is appropriate. The withdrawal of educational facilities from young offenders at this time is a matter of the gravest urgency and that is the reason for my decision.
