Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 26 Mar 1986

Vol. 111 No. 18

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1 and 2. The proposition is that on the conclusion of the Committee Stage of No. 1 we would proceed with the remaining Stages. Those having been passed, it is proposed that we would then take No. 2, concerned with the Earlier Signature Motion. The question of whether the sitting should be suspended from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. can be considered later in the morning when we see what progress has been made. If we are well on with the debate I think it would be the wish of Senators that there would not be a suspension, that we should carry through to complete the business as early as possible.

As a matter of exceptional public interest and in the light of continuing uncertainty in regard to the teachers' strike and the possible disruption of examinations, I should like to call on the Seanad to endorse a proposal calling on the Government to allow for the proposal for a mediator to be accepted immediately.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

As there is no motion before the House——

I am raising it as a matter of exceptional public interest, and as this is the only Oireachtas forum that is available at the moment I feel the matter should be allowed.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

You should have given me private notice under Standing Orders.

Is there a procedure——

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

I will be out of the Chair in an hour for my first break and I will talk to you then.

Order of Business agreed to.
