Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 30 Apr 1986

Vol. 112 No. 5

Business of Seanad.

On a point of order it has been decided that we would discuss the Order of Business for the coming weeks. Also I have raised the matter of nuclear fallout on a number of occasions today. I am not going to hold up the House. I have raised today the matter of the nuclear breakdown in perhaps one, two, three or four reactors in the USSR. We have sent to the people of the Ukraine our sympathy; we have discussed a lot of things.

This is not on the Order of Business.

I have asked for a short debate so that we can ask the Leader of the House whether or not we are going to get a reaction to my application, and indeed to other Senators' applications, to have a debate on this most specific and urgent problem.

Acting Chairman

The Senator is out of order and I have to ask him to resume his seat.

Senator Ferris is one of the Senators who agreed to this along with various other Senators.

Acting Chairman

That is out of order. Perhaps the Senator would resume his seat.

May I ask Professor Dooge, as Leader of the House, to give an indication if we are going to get a reaction from the Government to my request for a debate?

It might clarify things if I indicated that Senator Ferris, the leader of the Labour Party in the House, has been in touch with the Tánaiste who is willing to come into the House tomorrow during the course of the day, probably at 2.30 p.m., to make a statement on this matter. It is not proposed that this should be a subject of debate, although some points of clarification might be raised.
