Vol. 112 No. 12

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Items Nos. 1 and 2, in that order, and it is proposed to adjourn for tea from 5.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. I hope we shall finish at 8 p.m., as is normal, this evening. There is no Private Members' Business this week.

I should like to ask the Leader of the House what the intention is regarding this House, when it should sit towards the end of this week if the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution goes through the Dáil. There seems to be come confusion about this. There seems to be some difficulty about whether we are sitting Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, on this. I know there is a timetable to which the Government have to keep if they are to hold a referendum on the intended day. But perhaps the Deputy Leader of the House could give us an indication of how long we are going to sit, for the purposes of this legislation, whether speeches will be limited and whether we are likely to sit on Saturday, whether we will sit on Saturday and Monday if necessary. There seems to be a certain amount of ambiguity and disagreement between the parties which I do not understand.

Before I call on Senator Ferris to conclude on the Order of Business, is there any other Senator who wishes to speak? Senator Ferris to conclude.

The Order of Business is for today only. I do not know how long we will be required to sit this week but is is our intention to sit as long as is necessary to get the legislation through. There will be no curtailment of speeches on any side of the House. I am hoping that there will be agreement that anybody who has a contribution to make on the issue will be afforded the opportunity, and they will be facilitated in doing so this week by myself as Deputy Leader. I cannot answer the question of how many days we will sit. We will sit every day that is required to try to achieve what we want to do in this House. We will have a full and frank discussion of whatever topic is before us.

Order of Business agreed to.
