Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 5 Nov 1986

Vol. 114 No. 12

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in that order. It is proposed that we have a lunch break between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and a break for tea between 5.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. No. 5 will be taken at 6.30 p.m. until 8 p.m. With regard to No. 2, there is a possibility we may deal with Report Stage of this Bill as well depending on the progress we make during the day. If that is the case a suitable space of time will elapse between Committee Stage and Report Stage and in that event if we have reached the end of Committee Stage of Nos. 1 and 2 we will go on to No. 3 for a specified period and revert back to Report Stage of the Control of Dogs Bill, 1986.

On the Order of Business, yesterday during the debate on the report on the status of Irish I was critical of The Irish Press group for the fact that they have not been reporting the Seanad but on reflection I must make an apology. They had an editorial recently on the radio reporting of the Seanad. They were complimentary and said that democracy was being served by virtue of the fact that the Seanad was being reported on radio and they suggested that the TDs should get down to allowing reporting of their House. The reason I want to comment is that at the time the Dáil was being reported on radio. I am suggesting that not alone do The Irish Press group not cover the debate here and thereby do not allow the public to know what is happening here but they had in The Irish Press an editorial which suggested that the TDs should allow reporting of their House——

I have allowed you to make your point. You are completely out of order.

——at a time when that House was already being reported. The Irish Press group should have a further look at the Houses of the Oireachtas. Democracy would be better served if they reported properly what goes on here rather than ignoring this House and suggesting that the other House should be reported when it is already being reported.

I take it you agree to the Order of Business?

Order of Business agreed to.
