Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 8 Jul 1987

Vol. 116 No. 15

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Brendan Ryan, that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to ensure that funds provided by him to the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children are used for the purposes he intended.

I also received notice from Senator David Norris of the following matter:

The attendance of Irish diplomats at the official reception for President Waldheim of Austria on 25 June 1987 in the Vatican.

I also received notice from Senator Jack Daly of the following matter:

The need for the Government to reverse their decision to abolish Bord Scannán na hÉireann, the Irish Film Board, in the interests of the Irish film industry.

I also received notice from Senator Paul Bradford of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to indicate when it is proposed to start a building programme at Rahan national school, Mallow, County Cork, as a serious accommodation problem will exist there in September 1987 as some of the present accommodation is extremely unsatisfactory.

I also received notice from Senator Mick Lanigan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Foreign Affairs to use his considerable influence to ensure that the United Nations renew the UNIFIL mandate in Lebanon which expires on 19 July.

I also received notice from Senator Joe O'Toole of the following matter:

To demand of the Minister for Justice that persecuted members of the travelling community be offered the same protection from the law and the forces of law as the rest of the community, and that those who in recent times have attacked, threatened, frightened and evicted members of the travelling community be brought to justice immediately.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Ryan, Norris, Daly, Bradford and Lanigan as suitable for discussion on the adjournment. I have selected Senator Ryan's motion and it will be taken from 10 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. Senators Norris, Daly, Bradford and Lanigan may give notice for another day. With regard to the matters raised by Senator O'Toole, I will talk later with Senator Manning and him. The House should take note of my earlier reference if they want more freedom in this House.

I do not have any intention of making a speech but I want to say how grateful I am to you for directing the attention of the House to certain deficiencies and I hope all sides of the House will take this opportunity to bear in mind very clearly that you are giving us a lead in attempting to make the procedures of this House such that they may respond to serious matters.

Just in case the Senator took me up wrongly, I do not want to give the impression that there are any deficiencies in the Seanad because I do not think there are. What I said is that there might be greater freedom for the Members of this House and this reform is in their hands if they want it. I am the Cathaoirleach and I have to abide by the rules.
