Seanad Éireann debate -
Thursday, 29 Oct 1987

Vol. 117 No. 9

Business of Seanad.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

At the start of public business this morning the question of equality of opportunity arose and Item No. 1 was amended, and perhaps Senators might be interested in knowing the outcome of that. The amended Item No. 1 gave 66 per cent of the Labour Senators, 50 per cent of the Independent Senators, 37 per cent of the Fine Gael Senators and 23 per cent of the Government Senators the opportunity to speak.

I thank you for your elucidation of the percentage of time allocated to the Government and Opposition parties on this occasion.

On a point of information, we did not get a breakdown of the time. I would appreciate that as well, please.

If a matter of urgency needs to be debated the Government side will allow time in the future if the matter goes through the Whips and without trying to force me or the Government side into a position. We will allow time for debates on matters of urgency at any stage. The Seanad will adjourn until 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday next. There seems to be some confusion about the sitting arrangement for next week. We will sit at 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday, at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday, and at 10.30 a.m. on Thursday.
