Seanad Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 3 Nov 1987

Vol. 117 No. 10

Business of Seanad.

It is intended to adjourn now because the remaining amendments to the sections in this Bill are not completed. We will not take any further business today on this Bill or on any other Bill. I propose that the House adjourn now.

When is it proposed to take the Companies (No. 2) Bill again?

Perhaps I could explain to Senators that because of the complexity of this Bill we are trying to get it right. We have a lot of work done up to section 47. We are ready with that. We have dozens of submissions for the next sections of the Bill. We are wading through those and should be ready to come back to the Seanad in a short time, perhaps two or three weeks — sooner if we possibly can. We will try to arrange it with the Whips. I want the House to understand that that is the reason for the delay. We are not organised yet with the taking on board of submissions: we will be in about two or three weeks.

I am very glad the Minister has said that because I think all sides in the House want to get this Bill right. What I suggest as regards the matter of work on this Bill which is a very intense Bill, is that we do not have very, very long sessions on it but try to get through it quickly without huge chunks of time spent on it, so that we can get it right. Of course there is a small number of people participating in the debate.

I agree totally. It is worth while taking this Bill in groups of sections because it allows one time to study those up and it is only on short-term memory anyway. It is very useful. Without being patronising, I am very impressed by the procedure. It is my greatest involvement in legislation since I was elected and I feel the Minister has done everything possible to listen to the arguments being put forward and has accepted and rejected as he deemed wise. It is a model on how legislation should work. Whatever agreements or disagreements I may have with him — and there will be many — it is important that inputs to legislation are taken seriously and I do believe the Minister has done this. I would like to think here today that we have done more than certain parties which do not recognise this House have done in their history.
