Vol. 119 No. 1

Business of Seanad.

On a point of order, and it is a point of order, I want to know is it in order that we should ask questions on the Order of Business, awkward ones which are ignored and others to which we get absolutely no reply? It is completely pointless having an Order of Business in this House——

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

The Chair exercises no control over the replies, I am sure the Leader of the House does his best to remember all the points raised.

He does his best to avoid answering them.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

The Senator may avail of the opportunity perhaps next week. The Order of Business is Nos. 1, 2 and 3 with Senator O'Toole's motion under Standing Order 29.

I need to have a point clarified.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

The Standing Order says that once the Leader of the House has concluded that concludes the discussion on the Order of Business and I am maintaining that Standing Order.

I just wanted to ask you what you had agreed.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

The House has agreed to take Items Nos. 1, 2 and 3 with the Standing Order 29 procedure as proposed by Senator O'Toole being introduced at 4 o'clock or earlier.

The Leader of the House proposed that no motions would go down on the Order Paper any more. Are we voting on that?

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

That is not before the House.

If that was being put before the House I would have voted against the Order of Business.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

It is not before the House.

In other words, it is not a reality.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

The status quo remains. Item No. 1.

On a point of order. You are refusing to take a point of order. It has nothing to do with the Order of Business; it is a genuine point of order. I would like a limit of 15 minutes on the speeches on the motion this evening because I think other people, apart from myself, would like to get involved.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

The Chair suggests you might raise that at 4 o'clock.
