Seanad Éireann debate -
Thursday, 15 Dec 1988

Vol. 121 No. 13

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator John Connor that, on the Motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

In view of the disappointing outcome of recent attempts to change US immigration law, and the non-preference 5 Visa Programme, the need for the Minister for Foreign Affairs to provide funds for emigration reform and welfare groups working among and for the illegal Irish emigrant community in the United States of America.

I also received notice from Senator Donie Cassidy of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to sanction the sewerage treatment works at Castlepollard as a matter of urgency due to the pollution dangers to Lough Dereveragh.

I also received notice from Senator Séamus Cullimore of the following matter:

The need for the Government to impress upon the public the desirability of purchasing Irish made goods especially at this time of the year.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Connor, Cassidy and Cullimore as suitable for discussion. I have selected Senator Connor's matter and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Cassidy and Cullimore may give notice for another day of the matters they wish to raise.

There are two matters left. It would make it a little easier for me if those Senators decided which motion is to be taken because we only have tomorrow evening left, rather than for me to appear to favour one or the other which I would not do.
