Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 18 Jan 1989

Vol. 121 No. 15

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator John Connor that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Marine to relocate the national air and sea rescue services from Baldonnel to Connaught Regional Airport.

I also received notice from Senator Gerry Reynolds of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Agriculture and Food to give a direction in writing to An Teagasc under section 19 of the Agriculture (Research, Training and Advice) Act, 1988 in relation to carrying on the specified service of the Agricultural Research Station in Ballinamore, County Leitrim which is due to be closed.

I also received notice from Senator Brendan Ryan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to conclude his investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a homeless man in Thurles in June 1988.

I also received notice from Senator Nuala Fennell of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to acknowledge that there is an obligation on the Government to give special financial assistance to haemophiliacs who have developed AIDS or/are HIV positive, through blood transfusions given prior to 1986.

I also received notice from Senator Paddy McGowan of the following matter:

That Seanad Éireann notes the upturn in the tourism industry nationally.

I regard the matters raised by Seantors Connor, Reynolds, Ryan and Fennell as suitable for discussion. I have selected Senator Connor's matter and it will be taken from 8 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Senators Reynolds, Ryan and Fennell may give notice for another day of the matters they wish to raise.

The matter raised by Senator McGowan is too wide to be dealt with under the half hour Adjournment procedure and I regret I have to rule that it is not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment.

With respect, Senator McGowan is saying that it is not wide enough in County Donegal.

We will take the matter raised by Senator Connor on the Adjournment and we will take no notice of references like that.
