Vol. 122 No. 1

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Seán Haughey that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to allay public anxiety in regard to the recommendations of the Stardust Tribunal Report in view of recent media reports in that regard.

I also received notice from Senator John A. Murphy of the following matter:

The recent large increase in the number of experiments on animals.

I also received notice from Senator John Connor of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to intervene to stop the precipitate closure of St. Patrick's Psychiatric Hospital, Castlerea, at any time during the coming year and that the Minister makes a statement on the future of this Hospital.

I also received notice from Senator Maurice Manning of the following matter:

The serious situation in the National Library where gross understaffing has led to a drastic reduction in service and security which has now reached crisis proportions.

I also received notice from Senator Gerry Reynolds of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in view of the joint statement following a meeting of the Anglo-Irish Conference, to state what steps are being taken to proceed with the restoration of the Ballyconnell-Ballinamore Canal.

I also received notice from Senator Brendan Ryan of the following matter:

The delay by the Minister for Social Welfare incompleting the review of the system of operation of social welfare appeals.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Haughey, Murphy, Connor, Manning, Reynolds and Ryan as suitable for discussion. I have selected the matter raised by Senator Haughey and it will be taken from 8 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Senators Murphy, Connor, Manning, Reynolds and Ryan may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
