Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 1 Nov 1989

Vol. 123 No. 1

Date of Election of Leas-Chathaoirleach.

It is intended that we sit on Wednesday of next week for the election of the Leas-Chathaoirleach and for other business. I propose the adjournment of the House until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday of next week.

Before we adjourn I would like to let the House know that our party, the Labour Party, will be putting forward the name of Senator Jack Harte as a candidate for Leas-Chathaoirleach. I am doing that because it appears there have been rumours to the effect that this was not so. Senator Jack Harte will be a candidate for Leas-Chathaoirleach.

I would like to say that this is the beginning of the rot. We are losing this week and we are on to next week without taking any business. There is a full Order Paper in front of us and I would appeal to the Leader of the House that we should not delay until next week before starting on business. There is legislation and there are motions and it is just not acceptable that we waste another week in view of the time that has gone so far.

The proposal is that the House adjourn until Wednesday next. Is that agreed? Agreed.

The Seanad adjourned at 5 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 8 November 1989.
