Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 14 Mar 1990

Vol. 124 No. 7

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Murphy that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance to reverse the decision to withdraw field staff in the Ordnance Survey service.

I also received notice from Senator Upton of the following matter:

The discontinuation of grants for smokeless heating conversions by virtue of the Government's refusal to make any further special control area orders with particular reference to the Crumlin, Drimnagh and Bluebell areas of Dublin.

I also received notice from Senator Neville of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Labour to intervene in the industrial relations dispute, which is threatening the survival of 120 full-time and 180 part-time jobs, at the meat plant — details submitted — and the need for the Minister to make a statement on the matter

I also received notice from Senator Costello of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to increase funding to enable Dublin Corporation to continue their programme of upgrading their housing stock.

I also received notice from Senator Doyle of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance to immediately outline the future employment prospects for all our customs officers in the light of the free trade position in the EC from 1 January 1993, and in regard to his recent announcement concerning the introduction of automatic entry processing and direct trades input, on 1 January 1993.

I also received notice from Senator Ross of the following matter:

The unacceptable delay in the processing of investigations by the Garda Complaints Board and the need for the Minister to allocate additional staff immediately thereto.

I also received notice from Senator Norris of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to take urgent action to prevent the unauthorised demolition of three Georgian buildings on Arran Quay, Dublin.

I also received notice from Senator Cosgrave of the following matter:

The concern of employees in Irish Life regarding the proposed sale, with the necessity for full consultation with and information to be made available to all employees regarding their future.

I also received notice from Senator Jackman of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to appoint a temporary teacher to Killaloe national school to cover the period September 1990 to 1991.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Murphy, Upton, Neville, Costello, Doyle, Ross and Jackman as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Murphy's matter and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Upton, Neville, Costello, Doyle, Ross and Jackman may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

I regret I have to rule that the matters raised by Senator Norris and Senator Cosgrave are not suitable for discussion — Senator Norris's on the ground of lack of ministerial responsibility and Senator Cosgrave's as it advocates legislation.
