Vol. 124 No. 11

Order of Business.

Before I announce the Order of Business, could I make a technical statement for the benefit of Members? On a number of occasions there have been complaints that Members cannot be heard in the Chamber. There is no point in shifting these microphones around the place. The microphones are working quite correctly for the job they are doing but there is no amplification in the Chamber itself and I apologise. If I have to raise my voice on occasion, I will raise it if Senators cannot hear. That is just a technical matter.

On the Order of Business, it is intended that we take items Nos. 94 and 95 today, that we take item No. 94 from the conclusion of the Order of Business to 6.30 p.m. and that we take item No. 95 from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. I am not suggesting that we conclude item No. 94 at 6.30 p.m. I am saying that we take item No. 95 from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m., which is the motion in the name of the Labour group. If I may, I suggest to the Seanad that on item No. 94 we confine contributions to a maximum of 15 minutes per speaker. At 6.30 p.m., if the matter has been brought to a conclusion, that is all right, I am not suggesting that we conclude the debate at 6.30 p.m.

The Order of Business is agreed to from our point of view except in regard to one point on which I seek clarification. It is in everybody's interests that item No. 94 be completed today. If it has not been completed by 6.30 p.m., could we continue after 8 p.m. or as is agreed by the Whips and confirmed by the House?

I would definitely suggest that we bring this item to a conclusion today but we have a tradition that from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. we take a motion. If we have item No. 94 concluded at 6.30 p.m., fair enough, if not we will resume at 8 p.m., to conclude.

Order of Business agreed to.
