Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 23 May 1990

Vol. 125 No. 1

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Paddy McGowan that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The serious situation caused by the closure of a meat factory (details supplied) in County Donegal and the need for the Minister for Industry and Commerce to try to resolve this matter with AIBP and his Department.

I also received notice from Senators Tom Raftery and Liam Cosgrave of the following matter:

In view of the damage being caused to the economy both locally and nationally by the dispute at Waterford Glass, the need for the Minister for Labour to make every effort to resolve the dispute.

I also received notice from Senator Pat Upton of the following matter:

The need for the Government to take all possible steps to prevent the spread of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) to animals and humans.

I also received notice from Senator Dan Neville of the following matter:

The urgent need for the Minister for Education to fulfil her commitment to the construction of a community school at Rathkeale, County Limerick.

I also received notice from Senator Mary Jackman of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Industry and Commerce to request that industry advises third level colleges in advance as to their possible needs for recruitment of graduates in that year, thereby eliminating the unnecessary cost and efforts of students submitting application forms to which they invariably do not get acknowledgement.

I regard the matters raised by Senators McGowan, Raftery and Cosgrave, Upton and Neville as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator McGowan's matter and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Raftery and Cosgrave, Upton and Neville may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

I regret I have to rule the matter raised by Senator Jackman as not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the grounds of lack of Ministerial responsibility.
