Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 20 Jun 1990

Vol. 125 No. 10

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Tom Hussey that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance to consider Tuam, Country Galway, as a location for a Government Department as part of decentralisation scheme.

I also received notice from Senator Dan Neville of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to alleviate the enormous delays and the deteriorating position in the Land Registry, and to make a statement on the future efficiency of the Registry.

Tá fógra agam ón Seanadóir Pól Ó Foighil:

Le fiafraí den Aire Oideachais cén fáth nár fograíodh fós cead le haghaidh deisiucháin agus méadú dó Gairm Scoil Choilm Cille, Indreabhán, Contae na Gaillimhe a chur i gcrích mar a gealladh agus cén uair atá an tAire sásta an obair seo a cheadú.

I also received notice from Senator Tom Raftery of the following matter:

In view of the damage caused to cross-Border relations by the 48-hour restriction on travellers and in the light of the European Court of Justice findings, the need for the Minister for Finance to comply with the court's ruling by lifting this illegal restriction without delay.

I also received notice from Senator Joe Costello of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to increase funding to enable Dublin Corporation to continue its programme for upgrading its housing stock.

I also received notice from Senator Mary Jackman of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to discuss the possibility of the integration of third level colleges in the Limerick region.

I also received notice from Senator Paddy McGowan of the following matter:

The need for Seanad Éireann to take note of the report of the Foyle Fisheries Commission.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Hussey, Neville, Ó Foighil, Raftery and Costello as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Hussey's matter and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Neville, Ó Foighil, Raftery and Costello may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

I regret I have to rule the matters raised by Senator Jackman and McGowan are not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment — Senator Jackman's as it advocates legislation and Senator McGowan's on the ground of lack of ministerial responsibility and is more suitable for discussion as a substantive motion.
