Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 19 Dec 1990

Vol. 127 No. 4

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator O'Toole that, on the motion for the adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need to pay primary teachers on a fortnightly basis rather than monthly or bi-monthly and thereby eliminate what is clearly a discriminatory provision in as much as teachers are the only significantly sized group in the Civil or Public Service which does not have the option of fortnightly pay.

I also received notice from Senator Norris of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to review the case of a prisoner in Arbour Hill (name supplied) with a view to exercising his ministerial prerogative of commuting the sentence in the light of its comparative severity taking into account the circumstances of the case.

I also received notice from Senator Ross of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to outline the criteria used in the distribution of national lottery funds.

I also received notice from Senator Jackman of the following matter.

The need for the Minister for Tourism and Transport to clarify if he proposes to continue with his policy of current compulsory stop-over of transAtlantic flights at Shannon, particularly in view of recent announcements by Aer Lingus.

I also received notice from Senator Brendan Ryan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to ensure that the over £500,000 which has been allocated under section 10 of the 1988 Housing Act to alleviate the plight of the homeless, and is so far unspent, is used to help the homeless before the end of the current financial year.

I regard the matters raised by Senators O'Toole, Norris, Ross, Jackman and Ryan as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator O'Toole's matter and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Norris, Ross, Jackman and Ryan may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
