Vol. 131 No. 10

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Haughey that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Marine to outline the current situation regarding the report by his Department's inspectors and other reports into the collision between two ships near the entrance to Dublin Port on 21 November.

I also received notice from Senator Costello of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to rescind the decision to means test ESF grants for students enrolling in the regional technical colleges and Dublin Institute of Technology colleges.

I also received notice from Senator Neville of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to recognise and deal with the urban deprivation and absence of opportunity in life which is contributing to the high levels of urban crime in sections of our cities and towns.

I also received notice from Senator Brendan Ryan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Social Welfare to clarify, in the light of recent reports, the interpretation by his Department of the requirement that recipients of unemployment assistance and unemployment benefit be genuinely seeking work.

I also received notice from Senator Doyle of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to provide funds for the provision of permanent residential accommodation for the old and infirm of Wexford town and surrounding area.

I also received notice from Senator Fitzgerald of the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Health to provide extra funding to the Southern Health Board for the staffing of a dialysis unit in Tralee General Hospital.

I also received notice from Senator McKenna of the following matter.

The need for the Minister for the Environment to derate Gurteen Agricultural College, Ballingarry, Roscrea, County Tipperary.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Haughey, Costello, Neville, Ryan, Doyle and Fitzgerald as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Haughey's matter and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Costello, Neville, Ryan, Doyle and Fitzgerald may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

I regret I have to rule the matter raised by Senator McKenna as not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the grounds of lack of ministerial responsibility.
