Vol. 135 No. 1

Business of Seanad.

Will the Leader of the House indicte when the legislation currently in the Lower House will be taken here?

At 10.30 a.m. tomorrow.

Will the Leader indicate when it is proposed to sit again?

Tomorrow at 10.30 a.m. when we will take the State Authorities (Development and Management) Bill, 1993.

That is the business concluded. The House stands adjourned.

We talked about working and getting business done. There are two further items on the agenda and it is utterly unacceptable that this House should finish its business after an hour. It is not good enough. We have talked about a fresh start and so on. There are 60 people here to do a day's work and walking out the door after an hour and a quarter gives the wrong impression. The Udarás na Gaeltachta Bill and the National Stud Bill have to be dealt with and I propose that we deal with them today.

I would like to second that proposal.

Senator O'Toole those items have been concluded in the Dáil and must go on the Order Paper of this House. It was not intended to take them today. I encourage the Whips to meet as quickly as possible with a view to organising and streamlining the business of the House. As I understand it, we have concluded our business.

I want my views to go on the record. I wish to call for a vote against adjourning at this time. It is on the Order of Business and I made a fair proposal which I am entitled to do under the Standing Orders. I want it on record that if the House decides to finish its business after an hour and a quarter there are some who feel that is not the way to do business. It gives the wrong impression and it is not what we were elected to do. It is an important issue and we should deal with the business now. It is consistent with the view people have put forward. Let us get on with the business.

Question put: "That the House do now adjourn until 10.30 a.m. tomorrow."

The question is: "That the House do now adjourn until 10.30 a.m. tomorrow." On that question a division has been challenged. Will those Senators claiming a division please rise?
